Faculty of Animal Production & Technology

Department of Breeding & Genetics

Advancing animal breeding and genetics for improved livestock productivity and sustainable production.

Breeding & Genetics

What this department covers

The Department of Breeding and Genetics is an active component of the Faculty of Animal Production and Technology. The discipline combines genetics, biometry, mathematics and statistics, with the application of quantitative and molecular genetics to improve the performance of next generations based on available pedigree and performance records.

  • Imparting education at undergraduate, M.Phil and PhD level in Animal Breeding and Genetics
  • Improving production potential and per-unit productivity of farm animals through appropriate breeding plans
  • Application of quantitative and molecular genetic technologies for milk, meat, mutton and other animal products
  • Conducting basic and applied research in Animal Breeding and Genetics

The department is equipped with laboratory facilities for genome illustration, DNA isolation, purification and quantification, PCR for gene expression, quality checking and microscopic studies of animal and plant cells undergoing mitosis and meiosis. It also provides teaching and research facilities in population and quantitative genetics, estimation of genetic parameters such as heritability, repeatability and genetic correlations, measurement of inbreeding and relationship coefficients, ranking of animals based on EBVs, and the use of specialized computer software for Animal Breeding and Genetics.
